Reviews

By Nicholas Gemas (Lawrence, KS)

I hate to be the sole negative review on here, but seriously, why not release the Director's Edition of "The Motion Picture" and the Director's and Special (expanded) Editions of the other films? Why not give all six films a full "Godfather" restoration, instead of just "Wrath of Khan"?

(I've heard the story about not being able to release the Director's Edition of "The Motion Picture" on Blu-ray because the new SFX/CGI were rendered in standard definition. That's bull. You don't think it would be too difficult to re-render the effects in 1080P.)

The list of new featurettes and commentaries on this set is impressive, but the reality is only one film ("Wrath of Khan") has been given a complete restoration. The other titles were likely scanned from the same elements that were used for the previous DVD releases. If I have to see all the hundreds of imperfections in the other movies all over again, I'll stick to my original DVDs.

This not the version of "The Motion Picture" Robert Wise signed off on.

Why does it take the release of a new Star Trek movie to get these released? Why does everything have to coincide with everything else? These films should have been restored and released on Blu-ray two years ago.

Yes I know it's all about marketing, but keep in mind it's only a matter of time before we get a fully-restored, expanded-release, special-edition Blu-ray boxed set of all ten films.

So is this set worth it? Yes, if you want only the original theatrical versions of these six movies. Yes, if you don't care about the changes and updates in each film that were included on the previous DVD releases. Keep in mind they've only cleaned up one movie, via the "Godfather" restoration process. If this doesn't bother you, go ahead and spend your $100. You'll be validating Paramount's double-dipping practices. Who knows what we'll get next?
